Accessing the NDIS

Getting access to NDIS can be challenging. However, Carefirst Australia is here to simplify the steps that you need to know. As an organisation offering a wide range of supports for participants, we bring to you the resources that can help you access NDIS smoothly. So, if you are still not a participant and want to gain information about how to access NDIS and the procedures involved, the resources on this page will help.
What is NDIS?
NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. It is an Australian federal funding scheme that supports people living with various disabilities.

The scheme constitutes various types of funding for its participants depending on their preferences. The individuals can then spend the funding for the services they require such as domestic support, personal care, social support and allied healthcare.

Who is Eligible for the NDIS?
NDIS is designed to fund individuals living with disabilities. It is available for individuals from the age of 9 to 65. Earlier, the minimum age was 7. However, when it comes to disabilities, they have to be permanent and impact the ability to participate in day-to-day activities.

If you meet this criteria, you can apply for NDIS.

The NDIS funds a plethora of support services that include:
  • Personal activities
  • Life stage transition
  • Travel / transport
  • Community nursing care
  • Daily tasks shared living (SIL, STA, MTA)
  • Accommodation / Tenancy
  • Innovative community participation
  • Development of life skills
  • Household tasks
  • Participate community

How to Apply for NDIS Supports?
To access NDIS, you will need to submit an access request form to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). This is the government body that administers the scheme. The access request form is available on the NDIS website. Or, you can also contact the NDIA directly to request access. Whichever mode you choose, you will need to provide information about your disability and how it is impacting your life. Besides, you will need to mention whether you receive any form of supports.
Assessment Process
After you submit your request, the NDIA will review it to determine whether you are eligible for the scheme. They might ask you to provide additional information or supporting documentation, such as assessments by healthcare professionals, or medical reports, or both. The NDIA will work with you to gather the necessary information to support your request.
Attending the Planning Meeting
If your NDIS access request is approved, a planning meeting will be arranged for you. An NDIS planner will develop an individualised support plan based on your requirements. In this meeting, you can discuss your goals, preferences, aspirations, as well as the supports you need to achieve them. Your planner will coordinate with you to develop a plan according to your unique requirements.
Review and Appeals
If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the meeting or the plan, you can request a review or lodge an appeal with the NDIA. This will enable you to challenge the decisions made by the NDIA and seek a resolution that will meet your needs. You can also seek assistance from individuals offering advocacy and legal support since they can guide you with the review process better.
